HSS Milling Cutter

HSS milling cutters are precision tools used in milling machines, manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS), a material known for its excellent strength and wear resistance. They are well-suited for machining soft to medium-hard materials such as aluminum, brass, and mild steel, offering a good balance of durability and cost-effectiveness. Although HSS cutters perform reliably, they are not as hard as carbide tools and are generally less suitable for cutting very hard materials like stainless steel. .

Material:

HSS cutters are made from high-speed steel, a specialized tool steel prized for its hardness and its ability to retain sharpness even under high temperatures.

Applications:

They are commonly used for machining soft materials like aluminium, brass, and softer steels, where a balance of durability and affordability is needed.

Pros:

HSS cutters offer good strength, wear resistance, and sharpness for prolonged use. They are also relatively affordable, making them a good choice for various applications.

Cons:

HSS cutters operate at lower cutting speeds compared to carbide cutters and are generally not suitable for machining very hard materials such as stainless steel.Carbide cutters are a common alternative because of their exceptional hardness and excellent heat resistance. They are well-suited for machining tougher materials and are engineered to operate efficiently at higher cutting speeds.

Types of HSS Milling Cutters:

  • HSS milling cutters are available in several types, each tailored to specific milling applications:
  • HSS End Mills: Feature cutting edges on both the end and sides, enabling multi-directional cutting for operations like profiling, slotting, and plunging.
  • HSS Side and Face Cutters: Designed for cutting along the side of a workpiece. Ideal for operations such as slotting, contouring, and machining angular surfaces.
  • HSS Shell End Mills: These cutters have a hollow cylindrical body and are designed to hold multiple replaceable cutting teeth or inserts, making them suitable for heavy-duty face milling.
  • HSS Single Angle MILLING Cutters: Used for milling at specific angles.
  •   HSS DOUBLE Angle MILLING Cutters: Used for milling at specific angles.
